Medical negligence lawyer for ectopic and molar pregnancies

There are a number of abnormal forms of pregnancy which need careful diagnosis and treatment but if they are not and harm to the mother results, the services of a medical negligence lawyer may be needed to achieve justified compensation for the suffering caused.

Failure by doctors to act appropriately may lead to a mother having reduced fertility, being unable to have children at all or suffering other health problems. These physical difficulties can also result in mental health conditions.

Ectopic pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy is the term for a pregnancy where the foetus has been implanted outside the uterus, usually, but not always, in a fallopian tube. In about half of cases, there will be a spontaneous abortion and few consequences for the mother but in the others medical assistance will be needed, either drug-related or surgical, to remove the foetus.

Internal bleeding is a common complication and if untreated can be fatal. Although this is rare where modern treatment is available, it is still a medical emergency and should be regarded as such. Approximately one in ten mothers suffers from infertility after an ectopic pregnancy.

Molar pregnancy
Infertility is also a possible consequence of an untreated molar pregnancy which occurs when a non-viable, fertilised egg implants in the uterus. As with an ectopic pregnancy, it is likely to result in a spontaneous abortion.

However, if this does not occur or there is no medical intervention at that stage, it is possible for hydatidiform moles to develop into invasive moles or, in 2% to 3% of cases, choriocarcinoma, which is a malignant, rapidly-growing, and spreading form of cancer.

Although the cancers are survivable in the majority of cases, they usually result in a woman having her womb removed.

In both ectopic and molar pregnancies there are few early symptoms of the conditions but trained obstetricians should be well aware of the possibilities and if they neglect to perform tests and take prompt action to reduce the chance of harm to the mother, a compensation claim for clinical negligence may be appropriate, especially where future pregnancy becomes impossible.
