Erbs palsy and the legacy of William Smellie

When it is considered that Erbs palsy-type injuries have existed throughout human history, it is difficult to credit any one person with "discovering" the condition.

And, although the nineteenth century German neurologist Wilhelm Heinrich Erb (1840 - 1921), noted for being the first renowned advocate of the reflex hammer, gave his name to the condition after performing work on it with French Neurologist Guillaume-Benjamin-Amand Duchenne (1806 - 1875), William Smellie (1697 - 1793) is believed to have written the first ever medical description of the condition we now refer to erbs palsy.

Unlike Erb and Duchenne, the Scottish Smellie was a specialist obstetrician and has even been described as the "forefather of British midwifery". His groundbreaking description of a brachial plexus palsy occurred in his 1768 treatise on midwifery; it concerned an incident of transient bilateral arm paralysis in a newborn child.

Although his work has been commemorated in the naming of the now defunct William Smellie Memorial Hospital in Lanark, there are those among the British medical community who believe that the importance of Smellie's legacy has been neglected by the British medical establishment.

His 1754 work A sett of anatomical tables, with explanations, and an abridgment, of the practice of midwifery, was once regarded as the definitive printed description and demonstration of childbirth.
