Asbestosis is caused when asbestos fibres are inhaled. The fibres become lodged in the lungs and can cause scar tissue (fibrosis) to form inside the lung. Scarred lung tissue does not expand and contract in the normal way so gas exchanged cannot be performed. The seriousness of the disease depends on the length of exposure and the amount of asbestos that was inhaled.

The former causes very little physical discomfort whereas the latter is disabling and eventually fatal.
