Asbestos removal
It is believed that there are some half a million non-domestic properties that still have some form asbestos in them. Potentially anyone who comes into contact with the material as it breaks down is at risk of eventually contracting an asbestos-related disease such as emphysema or mesothelioma. It is for this reason that attempts of asbestos removal are often made. Those most likely to come into contact with the material are anyone working in the construction industries, plumbers and engineers.
How asbestos is removed
Asbestos can be sealed but this is not seen as a long-term solution to the issue. If the sealant is disturbed the fibres can become loose as with unsealed asbestos. The following methods are most commonly used:
- Dry stripping – this is the most commonly used method but it is not recommended by the authorities. Removing asbestos in a dry state creates higher dust levels than alternative methods.
- Controlled wet stripping - wetting fluids are used to break down the binding agents of the asbestos. This method controls fibre release. The asbestos containing material is cut away in clean pieces and disposed of. This is probably the safest way of removing asbestos as when the material is saturated very few fibres are released.
- High pressure water jetting - this is only used in hard to access places as it is very dangerous. It may be used when asbestos is particularly difficult to remove.
- Air management for hot stripping - this consists of high-powered airflow that directs the asbestos fibres to a filtered exhaust at the end of a specially designed enclosure. When the asbestos removal takes place it is sprayed to curb fibre release.
